Exploring the Role of Minimally Invasive Surgery in the Management of Uterine Fibroids: Patient Outcomes and Satisfaction

ABSTRACT:
Background: Uterine fibroids are a common benign condition among women of reproductive age, often causing significant symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and reproductive challenges. Traditional open surgeries for fibroid removal have been associated with longer recovery times and higher complication rates. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS), including laparoscopic and robotic techniques, has emerged as an alternative with the potential to reduce these burdens. Aim: This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of minimally invasive surgery in managing uterine fibroids, focusing on patient outcomes and satisfaction postoperatively. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 120 patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery for uterine fibroids between July 2022 and June 2023. Data were collected on postoperative outcomes, including complication rates, recovery time, symptom relief, and patient satisfaction through standardized questionnaires. Comparative analysis was performed against a cohort of patients who underwent traditional open surgery during the same period.Results: Patients who underwent minimally invasive surgery demonstrated significantly shorter hospital stays (mean of 2 days vs. 5 days in open surgery), reduced postoperative pain scores (3.5 vs. 6.8 on a 10-point scale), and a faster return to normal activities. In terms of symptom relief, 90% of the patients reported marked improvement in heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain. Additionally, patient satisfaction was notably higher, with 88% expressing a high level of satisfaction with the surgical outcome compared to 62% in the open surgery group. Complication rates were lower in the MIS group, with only 5% experiencing minor complications, compared to 15% in the open surgery group.
Conclusion: Minimally invasive surgery offers significant advantages in managing uterine fibroids, including faster recovery, lower complication rates, and higher patient satisfaction compared to traditional open surgery.
